About IMPROMPTU Division FORMAT

Students in Grades 9 through 12 participate in a competitive concours format. The students do not know their presentation topic before they attend the event.

Students first check-in at the Waiting Room, then proceed to the Preparation Room where they receive their topic based on a pre-selected prompt: either a photo, or phrase (Cube). They receive 15 minutes in the Preparation Room to prepare their presentation, then proceed to the Presentation Room where they present in front of judges, parents and guests. Students get moved every 5 minutes or so from room to room. Once they have presented they take a reserved seat in the Presentation Room until all students from their category have competed.

The Concours event is anonymous (However the participants’ names are used to call them up to speak) to ensure utmost credibility on behalf of the Officials. All participants receive a certificate of participation and their family automatically receives a one-year free membership to CPF. The first, second, and third place winners in each range/category receive a medal and prize money. First place participants also have a plaque sent to their school to be displayed. (back to top)

Impact of Participating in the Impromptu Division

In recent years, the paradigm shift in the teaching and learning of French has had an impact on the classroom. The professional discussions taking place across Ontario and nationwide about the action-oriented approach, spontaneous discussions and authentic tasks have been instrumental in the creation of the Impromptu division in 2017.  This division promotes fluency and the ability to speak on the spot. This is also a great opportunity for students who are in the SHSM program. Please be advised that a student can ONLY compete in either the Traditional or the Impromptu Divisions, not both. Also, only 1st place, Grade 11-12 winners from the Traditional Division will move up to the National competition in June.
