Our 35th annual Concours et festival d’art oratoire will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at York University’s Glendon Campus in Toronto.
The Concours et festival d’art oratoire is an annual French public-speaking event for students from grades 4 through 12 studying French as a Second Language in Ontario schools. It is organized by the Ontario Modern Language Teachers’ Association and Canadian Parents for French (Ontario). There are four categories – Core, Extended, Immersion and Francophone. Students in grades 4 through 8 participate in the non-competitive festival event in the morning and students in grades 9 through 12 participate in the competitive concours format in the afternoon for cash prizes. Winners from the grade 11-12 categories move on to represent Ontario at the CPF National competition held in Ottawa.

History of Concours
This event began in 1975 in the Ottawa-Carleton area and expanded to a provincial event when the Ontario Modern Language Teachers’ Association (OMLTA) and Canadian Parents for French (CPF) joined forces in 1985 as co-sponsors. The Concours et Festival d’art oratoire is an opportunity to integrate public speaking into regular classroom activity and to involve community members outside the classroom for judging and administration of classroom and school level events. With the current emphasis on voluntarism in education, Concours et Festival d’art oratoire presents new opportunities for teachers, administrators and secondary students to become involved.

At the 34th annual event in 2018, over 300 students from 21 school boards and 11 independent schools across Ontario participated at the provincial event at York University’s Glendon College in Toronto. At the classroom level, our estimates show that over 20,000 students across Ontario took part in French Second-Language public speaking.
